Speaking B1 Cambridge: partes, ejemplos y consejos

El Speaking B1 Cambridge (PET) es la prueba oral del examen oficial de Cambridge. Dura entre 10 y 12 minutos (o hasta 17 minutos si se hace en grupo de tres candidatos) y se realiza en parejas. Su objetivo es comprobar tu capacidad para responder preguntas, describir imágenes, interactuar con otro candidato y mantener una conversación en inglés clara y fluida.

Este examen forma parte del nivel B1 del Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (MCER), un estándar internacional que mide las competencias lingüísticas.

El examen está dividido en 4 partes (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 y Part 4) y cada sección mide una habilidad específica.

Speaking B1 Part 1: Preguntas personales

En la primera parte, el examinador te hará preguntas sobre ti, tus rutinas, tu ciudad, tu familia o tus gustos.
Ejemplos de preguntas:

1. About you / Personal information

Q: What’s your name and where are you from?
A: My name is Ana, and I’m from Madrid, the capital of Spain. It’s a big city with a lot of history and culture.

2. Home and family

Q: Can you tell me about your family?
A: Yes, of course. My family is small: I live with my parents and my younger brother. We like spending weekends together, especially cooking or watching movies.

3. Studies / Work

Q: What do you do? Do you study or work?
A: I’m a student at secondary school. I study subjects like English, history and science. My favourite is English because I enjoy learning new languages.

4. Free time / Hobbies

Q: What do you usually do in your free time?
A: In my free time I like reading novels and playing basketball with my friends. Sometimes I also watch films or listen to music in English to practise.

5. Daily routine

Q: What’s a typical day like for you?
A: I usually wake up early, around 7 a.m. I go to school until the afternoon, and after that I do my homework. In the evening, I relax, maybe go for a walk or chat with friends.

6. Likes and dislikes

Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: I really enjoy pop music because it’s energetic and fun. I don’t usually listen to heavy metal, because it’s too loud for me.

7. Future plans

Q: What would you like to do in the future?
A: In the future I’d like to travel abroad, maybe study in another country. I’d love to improve my English and experience a different culture.

Speaking B1 Part 2: Describir una foto (pictures/images)

Aquí tendrás que describir una fotografía durante aproximadamente 1 minuto.
Ejemplo:

Foto (ejemplo imaginado): Un grupo de jóvenes jugando al fútbol en un parque.

Respuesta modelo (≈1 minuto):

In this picture I can see some teenagers playing football in a park. They are wearing sports clothes, like T-shirts, shorts and trainers, and they look very happy.

The weather seems sunny and nice, so it is probably spring or summer. In the background, there are some trees and a few people walking, maybe families enjoying the day.

I think they are friends, because they are laughing and having fun together.

Maybe they are playing after school or at the weekend. In my opinion, it looks like a really good way to spend free time, because you can do exercise and enjoy with your friends at the same time.

• Comenta el lugar (in the background…, it is probably…)

• Añade tu opinión (I think…, In my opinion…)

Speaking B1 Part 3: Conversación en pareja

En esta parte deberás interactuar con tu compañero para discutir un tema a partir de una imagen o una lista de opciones. La idea es dar opiniones, comparar y llegar a un acuerdo.

Instrucciones del examen:
En esta parte, el examinador os da un tema con varias opciones (por ejemplo, un póster con imágenes) y tenéis que hablar en pareja durante unos minutos. Primero tenéis que intercambiar ideas y luego llegar a una conclusión juntos.

Ejemplo de conversación en pareja

The examiner says:
“Here are some ideas about free time activities for young people. Talk together about the advantages of each activity and then decide which one would be the best for a school club.”

(Opciones en las imágenes: reading books, playing sports, going to the cinema, doing music, learning computer skills).

Student A:
So, shall we start with sports? I think playing sports is great because it’s healthy and fun.

Student B:
Yes, I agree. And also, it helps you make friends. What about going to the cinema?

Student A:
Going to the cinema is nice, but it can be expensive, and you don’t really talk to people during the film.

Student B:
That’s true. Reading books could be interesting, but maybe some teenagers would find it boring.

Student A:
Yes, but learning computer skills sounds useful for the future. It could help students with jobs later.

Student B:
Good point. But I think music is more fun, because you can play together and enjoy as a group.

Student A:
I agree. So maybe the best option for a school club is music, because it’s fun and social.

Student B:
Yes, let’s choose music as the best one.

• Usa expresiones para dar tu opinión: I think…, In my opinion…, From my point of view…

• Para estar de acuerdo: I agree, That’s true, Exactly…

• Para discrepar suavemente: I see your point, but…, Maybe, but I think…

• Para decidir juntos: So, shall we choose…?, Let’s go with…

Speaking B1 Part 4: Discusión con el examinador

Finalmente, el examinador hará preguntas relacionadas con el tema de la Parte 3. Se espera que desarrolles más tus ideas y justifiques tus respuestas.

Instrucciones del examen:
En esta parte, después de la conversación en pareja (Part 3), el examinador hace algunas preguntas relacionadas con el mismo tema. Aquí se espera que hables un poco más, expliques tus ideas y des opiniones personales.

Preguntas del examinador (ejemplo):

1. Do you think young people today have enough free time? Why / Why not?

2. What is better: spending free time alone or with friends?

3. How important is it for teenagers to do sports?

Ejemplo de respuestas

Q1. Do you think young people today have enough free time?
I don’t think so. Many teenagers have a lot of homework and extra classes, so sometimes they don’t have much free time. But when they do, they usually spend it with friends or online.

Q2. What is better: spending free time alone or with friends?
It depends. If I am tired, I like being alone, listening to music or watching a series. But usually I prefer spending time with my friends because it’s more fun.

Q3. How important is it for teenagers to do sports?
I think it’s very important. Sports help you stay healthy and also make you feel happier. It’s also a good way to meet people and learn teamwork.

Q4. Do you think technology has changed the way young people spend their free time?
Yes, definitely. Many teenagers spend hours with their phones, playing games or using social media. Technology is great, but sometimes people forget to go outside or do exercise.

Consejos para esta parte

• Da respuestas un poco más largas (3–4 frases).

• Usa ejemplos personales para sonar natural.

• Varía conectores: because, but, also, however, in my opinion…

• No tengas miedo de decir “I’m not sure, but I think…” si dudas.

Criterios de evaluación en el Speaking B1

Los examinadores valoran tu desempeño en base a:

• Gramática y vocabulario: uso correcto de estructuras básicas y vocabulario adecuado.

• Gestión del discurso: organizar ideas con coherencia y enlazarlas con conectores.

• Pronunciación: claridad y entonación comprensible.

• Comunicación interactiva: tu habilidad para responder, hacer preguntas y mantener la conversación.

Consejos para preparar el Speaking B1

• Practica describiendo fotos y respondiendo preguntas típicas.

• Haz simulacros de examen con un compañero para familiarizarte con la dinámica.

• Aprende frases útiles para cada parte del examen y úsalas de forma natural.

• Escucha ejemplos de exámenes en vídeo para mejorar tu pronunciación y fluidez.
