Look up en inglés: significado, usos y ejemplos

El phrasal verb “look up” es una de esas expresiones comunes del inglés que cambia de significado según el contexto. Puede significar buscar información, mirar hacia arriba, mejorar una situación o incluso contactar o visitar a alguien.

1. Look up = Buscar información

Se usa cuando buscas un dato, palabra o definición en un diccionario, libro, internet o cualquier fuente de información.

Ejemplos:

• You can look it up online. (Puedes buscarlo en internet.)

• She looked up the restaurant’s address. (Buscó la dirección del restaurante.)

Expresión común:
Look something up → buscar algo.

2. Look up = Mirar hacia arriba

También puede significar levantar la vista o mirar hacia el cielo.

Ejemplos:

• Look up! There’s a rainbow. (¡Mira hacia arriba! Hay un arcoíris.)

• He looked up from his phone. (Levantó la vista del móvil.)

3. Look up = Mejorar o ir mejor

Cuando decimos que “things are looking up”, queremos decir que las cosas están mejorando.

4. Look up = Contactar o visitar a alguien

Se usa con personas, especialmente con el pronombre me / him / her / us / them, para decir que vas a visitar o contactar a alguien después de mucho tiempo.

Ejemplos:

• Look me up when you’re in London. (Búscame o visítame cuando estés en Londres.)

• I’ll look you up next time I’m in town. (Te buscaré la próxima vez que esté en la ciudad.)

• He looked up some old friends from university. (Contactó con algunos viejos amigos de la universidad.)
