Uso de la preposición by en inglés

La preposición by en inglés es una de las más versátiles y comunes. Puede significar “por”, “junto a”, “cerca de”, “antes de”, “a través de” o indicar el medio o el agente que realiza una acción. Su significado depende del contexto, por eso conviene conocer los principales usos con ejemplos.

1. By para indicar autor o agente en la voz pasiva

En oraciones pasivas, by se usa para indicar quién realiza la acción.
Ejemplos:

• The book was written by J.K. Rowling. (El libro fue escrito por J.K. Rowling.)

• The cake was made by my grandmother. (La tarta fue hecha por mi abuela.)

• This song was composed by The Beatles. (Esta canción fue compuesta por The Beatles.)

2. By para indicar medio o forma de transporte

Usamos by para hablar del medio o método que usamos para desplazarnos o comunicarnos.
Ejemplos:

• I go to school by bus. (Voy al colegio en autobús.)

• She travelled by plane. (Viajó en avión.)

• We met by phone. (Nos conocimos por teléfono.)

• He paid by card. (Pagó con tarjeta.)

Nota: No se usa a/an/the con by en estos casos. Decimos “by car” (no by the car).

3. By para indicar proximidad o lugar

By también puede significar “cerca de” o “al lado de”.
Ejemplos:

• The house is by the river. (La casa está junto al río.)

• Sit by me. (Siéntate a mi lado.)

• There’s a café by the station. (Hay una cafetería junto a la estación.)

4. By para indicar tiempo límite o fecha

Usamos by para referirnos a una acción que debe completarse antes de un momento concreto.
Ejemplos:

• I’ll finish the report by Friday. (Terminaré el informe antes del viernes.)

• Please arrive by 9 a.m. (Por favor, llega antes de las 9.)

• We need to submit it by the end of the week. (Debemos entregarlo antes de final de semana.)

5. By para indicar forma o método

Se usa by para indicar cómo se hace algo.
Ejemplos:

• You can open the door by pressing this button. (Puedes abrir la puerta pulsando este botón.)

• She improved her English by practising every day. (Mejoró su inglés practicando todos los días.)

• We save energy by turning off the lights. (Ahorramos energía apagando las luces.)

6. By para indicar autoría o creación

Se usa para expresar de quién es algo o quién lo ha hecho.
Ejemplos:

• A painting by Picasso. (Una pintura de Picasso.)

• A novel by Jane Austen. (Una novela de Jane Austen.)

• Music by Beethoven. (Música de Beethoven.)

7. By en expresiones de lugar o tiempo

Algunas expresiones muy comunes con by:

• By the way → Por cierto

• By chance → Por casualidad

• By myself / By yourself → Solo / tú solo

• By mistake → Por error

• By day / By night → De día / de noche

Ejemplos:

• I met her by chance. (La conocí por casualidad.)

• He did it by mistake. (Lo hizo por error.)

• She lives by herself. (Vive sola.)
