Uso de IF y WHETHER en inglés

Las palabras if y whether se traducen como “si” en español, pero no siempre son intercambiables. Aunque ambas pueden aparecer en preguntas indirectas, su uso depende del tipo de frase y del contexto. Saber cuándo usar una u otra es clave para hablar y escribir inglés correctamente.

IF – Para condiciones o posibilidades

Usamos if para hablar de condiciones, posibilidades o situaciones hipotéticas.
También se usa en preguntas indirectas sencillas (cuando no hay alternativas).

Ejemplos:

• If it rains, we’ll stay home. (Si llueve, nos quedaremos en casa.)

• I’ll call you if I have time. (Te llamaré si tengo tiempo.)

• I don’t know if she’s coming. (No sé si viene.)

Usos principales de if:

1. En oraciones condicionales.

2. En preguntas indirectas sin alternativas.

3. Cuando se habla de una posibilidad o duda general.

WHETHER – Para elecciones o dudas formales

Usamos whether cuando hay dos o más alternativas, o cuando queremos sonar más formales o precisos.
También se usa después de preposiciones y antes de infinitivos (to + verbo).

Ejemplos:

• I don’t know whether to go or stay. (No sé si ir o quedarme.)

• She asked whether you were coming. (Preguntó si venías.)

• There are doubts about whether the plan will work. (Hay dudas sobre si el plan funcionará.)

• We’re thinking about whether to move to London. (Estamos pensando si mudarnos a Londres.)

Usos principales de whether:

1. Cuando hay alternativas o elecciones (often with or).

2. Después de una preposición (about, on, in, etc.).

3. Antes de un infinitivo (to do, to go, etc.).

4. En contextos formales o escritos.

Diferencia entre if y whether

Ejemplos comparativos

• I don’t know if he’ll come. (No sé si vendrá.)

• I don’t know whether he’ll come or not. (No sé si vendrá o no.)

• She asked if I was hungry. (Preguntó si tenía hambre.)

• She asked whether I was hungry or tired. (Preguntó si tenía hambre o estaba cansado.)

• We talked about whether we should move. (Hablamos sobre si deberíamos mudarnos.)

• He can’t decide whether to study or work. (No puede decidir si estudiar o trabajar.)

Errores comunes

❌ I don’t know if to go. → incorrecto
✅ I don’t know whether to go.

❌ There are doubts about if he’ll come. → incorrecto
✅ There are doubts about whether he’ll come.

❌ She’s thinking if she should call. → poco natural
✅ She’s thinking whether she should call.

Frases útiles con if y whether

• I’ll go if you go. (Iré si tú vas.)

• Let me know if you need help. (Dime si necesitas ayuda.)

• I wonder whether he’ll accept the offer. (Me pregunto si aceptará la oferta.)

• We’re not sure whether to take the job or not. (No estamos seguros de si aceptar el trabajo o no.)

• I’ll ask if she’s free tomorrow. (Preguntaré si está libre mañana.)

• Usa if para condiciones o posibilidades.

• Usa whether para alternativas, después de preposiciones o antes de un infinitivo.
