Singular y plural en inglés

El singular y plural en inglés es una parte fundamental de la gramática. En general, el plural se forma añadiendo -s al sustantivo, pero existen muchas reglas y excepciones que conviene conocer.

Aprender las formas plurales te ayudará a hablar y escribir con precisión, especialmente al describir personas, objetos, animales o lugares en cantidad.

Reglas generales para formar el plural

1. Añadir “-s”

La regla más común: la mayoría de los sustantivos forman el plural añadiendo -s.
Ejemplos:
book → books (libro → libros)
car → cars (coche → coches)
apple → apples (manzana → manzanas)

2. Sustantivos que terminan en -s, -x, -z, -sh, -ch

Se añade -es al final.
Ejemplos:
bus → buses (autobús → autobuses)
box → boxes (caja → cajas)
watch → watches (reloj → relojes)
church → churches (iglesia → iglesias)

3. Sustantivos que terminan en consonante + y

Se cambia la y por i y se añade -es.
Ejemplos:
party → parties (fiesta → fiestas)
city → cities (ciudad → ciudades)

4. Sustantivos que terminan en vocal + y

Solo se añade -s.
Ejemplos:
toy → toys (juguete → juguetes)
day → days (día → días)

5. Sustantivos que terminan en -f o -fe

En la mayoría de los casos, se cambia -f / -fe por -ves.
Ejemplos:
knife → knives (cuchillo → cuchillos)
life → lives (vida → vidas)
shelf → shelves (estante → estantes)

Excepciones: roof → roofs, belief → beliefs.

6. Sustantivos que terminan en -o

Por lo general, se añade -es, aunque hay excepciones.
Ejemplos:
tomato → tomatoes (tomate → tomates)
hero → heroes (héroe → héroes)
piano → pianos (piano → pianos)

7. Sustantivos irregulares

Algunos plurales cambian completamente o no siguen ninguna regla.
Ejemplos:
man → men (hombre → hombres)
woman → women (mujer → mujeres)
child → children (niño → niños)
tooth → teeth (diente → dientes)
foot → feet (pie → pies)
mouse → mice (ratón → ratones)

8. Sustantivos invariables

Algunas palabras tienen la misma forma en singular y plural.
Ejemplos:
fish → fish (pez → peces)
deer → deer (ciervo → ciervos)
sheep → sheep (oveja → ovejas)
