Los artículos en inglés: diferencia entre The, A y An con ejercicios

Los artículos en inglés se usan antes de un sustantivo para indicar si hablamos de algo general o específico. Existen dos artículos indefinidos (a, an) y un artículo definido (the). Aprender a usarlos correctamente es clave para mejorar tu gramática.

Artículos indefinidos: a / an

Se usan con sustantivos contables y singulares cuando hablamos de algo por primera vez o de forma general.

a → antes de sonido de consonante
a cat, a dog, a student

an → antes de sonido de vocal (a, e, i, o, u)
an apple, an idea, an umbrella

Lo importante es el sonido, no la letra:
an hour (la h no suena → vocal)
a university (suena /yu/ → consonante)

Artículo definido: the

Se usa para hablar de algo específico, único o conocido por el oyente.
The sun, the table, the internet

Puede usarse con singular y plural, contables e incontables:
The books are expensive
The water is cold

Ejemplos:

I have a new phone (Tengo un teléfono nuevo)
The phone is very fast (El teléfono es muy rápido)
She is eating an apple (Ella está comiendo una manzana)
They opened the door (Ellos abrieron la puerta)

Reglas de uso:

• Primera mención = a/an
• Segunda mención = the
• Superlativos llevan the → the best, the most important
• No se usa artículo con comidas, idiomas o deportes en general → I like pizza / Spanish / football

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Puedo usar “the” con nombres propios?
Normalmente no, excepto en países o lugares formados por varias palabras: The United Kingdom, The Eiffel Tower.

¿“A” y “an” se utilizan en plural?
Nunca. Son solo para singular contable.

¿Por qué algunas palabras con vocal llevan “a”?
Depende del sonido, no de la letra: a university (/yu/).
