Verbo to say en inglés

El verbo to say significa “decir” y se usa para expresar palabras, pensamientos o citas textuales. Es uno de los verbos más comunes en inglés y se emplea tanto en contextos formales como informales.

A diferencia de to tell, que se usa cuando mencionamos a quién decimos algo, to say se centra en lo que se dice.
Por ejemplo:
She said she was tired. (Dijo que estaba cansada.)
She told me she was tired. (Me dijo que estaba cansada.)

Usos comunes del verbo to say

1. Para expresar lo que alguien dice o dijo:
She said it was important. (Dijo que era importante.)
They said they’d call later. (Dijeron que llamarían más tarde.)

2. En estilo directo:
He said, “I’m leaving.” (Él dijo: “Me voy.”)

3. En expresiones comunes:
That’s to say… (Es decir…)
I must say… (He de decir…)
Let’s say… (Digamos que…)
You can’t say that! (¡No puedes decir eso!)

Estructuras básicas

Afirmativa: Sujeto + say + complemento
I say the truth. (Digo la verdad.)

Negativa: Sujeto + don’t / doesn’t / didn’t / won’t say + complemento
He doesn’t say much. (No dice mucho.)

Interrogativa: Do / Does / Did / Will + sujeto + say + complemento
What did she say? (¿Qué dijo ella?)
